In
the about 1979 I took a course in Country/Western Dance. This was
the Tucson style (not many line dances--more "free-wheeling," something
you could even do at a disco, with lot of twirls and spins). Later,
the instructor (Pam) and I began teaching it together--we were spending
lots of time together, anyway! This form of dance was very big in
the Rocky Mountain West, peaking around the "Urban Cowboy" time in the
early-to-mid 1980's. In Boulder at the time there were at least three
good places to go--"Peggy's Hi-Lo," "The Olympic," and "Arapahoe
Ranch" in particular were hoppin.' In fact, this was a great musical
era in Boulder, with 12-15 live bands--with music of all types--on weekends
and nearly that many during the week.
It's still great fun
(something about dancin' of any kind that stirs primitive happy juices!)
and good exercise. I still go, occasionally, down to the Grizzley
Rose, but miss the big Western Swing era in Boulder.
