Population
Environment Research Network
From
their web site: "The Population-Environment Research Network seeks
to advance academic research on population and the environment by
promoting on-line scientific exchange among researchers from social and
natural science disciplines worldwide." The virtual network offers an
excellent e-library with search tools, occasional cyber-seminars,
regular updates on conferences, publications, and funding opportunities
of interest. Sign up now!
From
their web site: "The Center for International Earth Science
Information Network (CIESIN) was established in 1989 as a non-profit,
nongovernmental organization to provide information that would help
scientists, decision-makers, and the public better understand their
changing world. CIESIN operations the "world data center" for
human interactions in the environment, including the Socio-Economic
Data Applications Center (SEDAC) through which users synthesize and
apply earth science and socioeconomic data and information in their
research, educational activities, analysis and decision-making."
Population-Environment
Linkages Service
Provided
by the National Library for the Environment, this web site offers many
resources including bibliographies, news, and discussion groups related
to the association between human population and the environment.
Population Reference
Bureau
From
their web site: "The Population Reference Bureau is the leader in
providing timely and objective information on U.S. and international
population trends and their implications. In March 1999,
PRB launched the Southern Population and Environment Initiative.
Over six years, the initiative will work with developing country policy
research institutions that are examining the relationships among
population variables, health impacts, and the environment to help
enhance the quality and impact of their work. The initiative will help
researchers develop their contribute to policy discussions on PHE
issues; advance regional networks for information exchange on PHE
linkages; and produce studies on key PHE linkages."
In
May, 2000, PRB's IP division, in collaboration with the National Center
for Science and the Environment, launched a Web site on population
health and the environment: www.popplanet.org . This
program is co-funded by the Summit Foundation and MEASURE
Communication.
People and the
Planet
From
PRB overview, Jan 2001: This website is devoted to the
interrelated issues of population, poverty, consumption, health, and
the environment. Fourteen key topics are planned and seven are
now online (as of Feb, 2001) -- human development, food and
agriculture, reproductive health, coasts andoceans, renewable energy,
pollution, and forests. Each topic includes an overview, facts
and figures, news stories, book and film reviews, a glossary, and web
links.
International Instititute
for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA)
IIASA
is a non-governmental research organization located in Austria. The
institute conducts inter-disciplinary scientific studies on
environmental, economic, technological and social issues in the context
of human dimensions of global change. Population, economic
transitions, land use, and air pollution represent key research
areas.
