Part 1: 17th- and Early 18th-Century Keyboard Music

August 24: Keyboard Instruments, genres, and overview. 
        Reading: Silbiger: 1-21 (Introduction)

August 26, August 31, September 2: English Virginalists: Byrd, Bull, Gibbons, etc.; Frescobaldi.
        Readings: Silbiger: 23-62; 240-245 (Italian stringed keyboard instruments), 281-292 (Frescobaldi).
        Brown and Sadie: 29-43

       
September 7, 9, 14: D’Anglebert, Froberger , Louis Couperin, François Couperin, Rameau.

                    Silbiger: 118-146, 183-190, Marshall 1-17, 124-153. Please see the Colin Tilney compilation "The Art of the Unmeasured Prelude" on reserve in the library.

                   
September 16,  21, 23, 28, : A little Kuhnau, a lot of J. S. Bach. Please bring your own or library scores of the works we will discuss to each class from here on out as much as possible.

September 30: Special presentation on Stockhausen by Frank Gutschmidt, with demonstrations. All piano majors encouraged to attend!

Also: Presentation on Late Haydn Sonatas by Brad Marcotte


November 2: Late Haydn plus leftovers (guest TBD). Presentations by Tigranuhi Arakelyan on Haydn Trios and by Megan Koegel on keyboard pedagogy of the period.


November 4: The London School: Clementi, Hummel, Dussek, Field. Presentation by Peter Ryan on Hummel.

November 9: Beethoven I (Marshall: 394-424);
November 9: Beethoven II (Rosenblum 144-189)
(This is being compressed to accommodate the special guest appearance on November 16 - I will spread things a bit more equitably than it looks from this plan.)
