Undergraduate Proficiency Exam
Requirements


 

Adopted Spring 2002.  All proficiency examinations after May 2002 will follow these requirements.
This exam is given after four semesters of study, usually at the end of the sophomore year - see policy statement.

Added Spring 2004 - the Listening Examination must be completed before the Proficiency Examination may be taken. 
 

Bachelor of Arts

1.  Solo – a piece with accompaniment as assigned.  See tenor and bass solo literature pages for examples.

2.  Sight Reading –    Tenor Trombone: Tenor Clef
                                 Bass Trombone:  Bass Clef

3.  Scales – major; 2 octaves when possible, 5 note patterns, scales in thirds; quarter note = 76
           (see sophomore level in M. Stevens Scale and Arpeggio Routines)

                   minor; all three forms, 2 octaves when possible; quarter note = 60

4.  Jazz or Orchestral – as assigned (orchestral excerpts, jazz etude, jazz transcription,
            improvisation, etc.)
 

Bachelor of Music Education

1.  Solo – a piece with accompaniment as assigned.  See tenor and bass solo literature pages for examples.

2.  Sight Reading – Tenor and Bass Trombone: Tenor Clef

3.  Scales – major; 2 octaves when possible, 5 note patterns, scales in thirds; quarter note = 76

               Wagner          Ride of the Valkyrie (tenor and bass)

               Beethoven      Symphony No. 9 (bass)
               Wagner          Entry of the Gods into Valhalla (bass)

5.  Jazz – as assigned: etude, transcription, improvisation, etc.
