Here come the pits

Our laboratory is developing new scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) techniques for the study of impurity atoms in metal, carbon based, oxide, and other surfaces. Spectroscopic imaging STM studies have already proven quite successful in the study of complex metal oxides like the high temperature superconductors, and we are extending them to other materials. The high resolution spectroscopy of a STM system allow for the investigation of both the adsorbed atoms and the low energy local environment that governs their surface dynamics.
