Music 3812
Spring, 2001
Term Paper Each student will write a short term paper on a topic of his/her own selection. This
topic may be the works of a particular composer, a specific form or genre, musical
life in a particular town or region, the development of an instrument, or another topic
approved by the instructor. The topic must fall within the chronological period of
1800-1950. Topics should be chosen and turned in to the instructor no later than
March 23, 2001. The finished papers are due no later than April 25, 2001.

The paper should be written observing all elements of good English prose, and that
aspect will be considered in the final grade assigned. (Special consideration will be
given for foreign students for whom English is not their primary language.) It
should be typed (or printed by computer) and should not exceed 5 pages in length.
(Do not right justify, unless you hyphenate to reduce blank space within the line.)

In doing your research for this paper, the best place to begin is with The New Grove
Dictionary of Music and Musicians, which may be found in the reference section of
the Music Library. This work is the standard reference encyclopedia in English, and
each entry is provided with a good bibliography that can lead you to other works on
the topic. It is important that you acknowledge any material that you acquire from
another published source by citing that source in a footnote. (Failure to do so is
considered academic dishonesty.) If you have difficulty in finding source material,
feel free to consult the instructor for advice. The instructor will also be available
(during office hours or by appointment) to provide additional assistance as
necessary.
