Role of cytosolic phospholipase A2 in the activation of inflammation. Calcium binding to the C2 domain of phospho-cPLA2 triggers membrane binding and subsequent hydrolytic release of arachadonic acid, which is a precursor to inflammatory prostaglandins in the pathway blocked by aspirin, ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatory drugs (Nalefski & Falke, 1996; Nalefski, Slazacs & Falke, 1997; Nalefski et al, 2001).
