Calcium activation and inactivation cycle of the cPLA2 C2 domain. When a calcium rise occurs, two calcium ions bind to the apo domain with positive cooperativity, thereby driving domain binding to phosphatidylcholine head groups. When calcium is removed, one calcium dissociates more rapidly, followed by the second calcium and virtually simultaneous release of the domain from the membrane (Nalefski, Slazas & Falke, 1997; Nalefski et al., 1998; Nalefski et al, 2001).
