Structure of a representative C2 domain from cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2, coordinates provided by Roger Williams and coworkers). As for other C2 domains (Nalefski & Falke, 1996; Nalefski et al, 2001), the architecture is a beta-sandwich composed of two four-stranded, anti-parallel beta sheets. This C2 domain is activated by the binding of two calcium ions (spheres) to the three calcium binding loops(Nalefski, Slazas & Falke, 1997). The same three loops then serve as the membrane docking site (Nalefski & Falke, 1998; Frazier et al., 2002).
