Band archeology in topological insulators: The effects of non-topological metallic bands on topological edge states

Gil Refael, California Institute of Technology

Topological insulators are characterized by bands with a non-trivial topological properties and edge states. The topological behavior, however, could be obscures by additional topologically inert bands. In this work we explored the spectral effects of a parasitic metallic band on the band structure and edge states of a topological insulator. Surprisingly, we found that edge states seem to multiply rather than disappear. Using the Fano-model I will show how this multiplication comes about, and consider the experiments consequences.
