Does global structure recapitulate local structure in cuprate superconductors?

Kyle McElroy, CU Boulder

In the last few years a unified picture has begun to emerge of the electronic structure in the copper oxide superconductors. In this picture different energy scales, which have been identified by several different spectroscopies, have been shown to have qualitatively different behavior across the doping phase diagram. I will describe a new technique we have developed for extracting these energy scales both at the atomic scale and across dopings using scanning tunneling microscopy. In addition, we have invented a new way to extract the relationship between the local structure of materials and their momentum space origin. From these results I will discuss how the global structure of these materials seems to recapitulate the local behavior.
