Assignment #1: Ethics Blog

As discussed in class, the field of journalism has been beset by a dramatic culture change because of the introduction of new media.

For next class, I want you to answer ONE of the following two questions:

  1. Write a blog article discussing a case where traditional values and principles might be applied (or considered) differently in a new media contex than in the old. What is different? Why? What are the most important ethical principles and why?

  2. What is a phenomenon that you see in news that you find troubling? Is it uenthical? What standards of ethics do you feel are under challenge? What should our industry do in such a case?

These blog assignments are meant to be commentary pieces (part news, part analysis, part opinion). A good technique for addressing a topic is to find a current news angle or story that is relevant to your topic, describe the important background and details, analyze the significance of the news, and add perspective that displays a larger trend fo significance.

I'm looking for commentary that uses micro-examples to allow you present a macro-story. Your overarching theme should address blogging in general, while you are referring to a case in point.

You are free to cite media sources, interview appropriate members of the CU community or create/provide access to any pertinent information.

How will I grade these?

Students often ask about my grading criteria for blogs. To put it simply, I value the following areas:

  • Basics - spelling, grammar, subject-verb agreement
  • Content - Is your position or argument concise? Did you close in a strong fashion?
  • Style - Good use of links, appropriate paragraph breaks, active voice, personal and external voices both used
  • Creativity - creative use of multimedia or other content

To get a positive grade, you do not need to achieve perfection in all four of these areas. However, you should be strong in at least three.
