Extra Credit Assignment #1: Obama Blog

This coming Tuesday at 10 a.m. local, America will make history when the first non-white president in its history will be sworn in.

I'm asking you to watch the speech live and conver it from a new media perspective. I suspect most of you will either blog or twitter, but I would certainly allow or a Youtube commentary video.

The goal is to provide live reactions to a developing story. If you blog, you should consider micro-blogging or posting a fast response blog within 30 minutes of the event's conclusion.

If you twitter, make sure you send me your twitter feed.

You are free to cite media sources, interview appropriate members of the CU community or create/provide access to any pertinent information.

How will I grade these?

Students often ask about my grading criteria for blogs. To put it simply, I value the following areas:

  • Basics - spelling, grammar, subject-verb agreement
  • Content - Is your position or argument concise? Did you close in a strong fashion?
  • Style - Good use of links, appropriate paragraph breaks, active voice, personal and external voices both used
  • Creativity - creative use of multimedia or other content

To get a positive grade, you do not need to achieve perfection in all four of these areas. However, you should be strong in at least three.

Due Friday, January 23.
