Assignment #5: Brodsky: News Executives Losing Fight Against Law and Technology Blog
It's not often that your worlds as future journalists and new media consumers will combine so neatly, but Art Brodsky recently published an indictment of the Associated Press' efforts to control the use of its content.
Embedded within this article is the core of the Digital Copyright struggle, by an organization dedicated to sharing content in a particular way.
Your assignment is to react/respond to these issues. Does the AP have a coherent legal case? Is this the key to its survival? If yes, how can the AP evolve to meet the demands for digital content? If no, how should the AP be addressing this challenge?
No minimum (or maximum) word length. I just want to know you've engaged these texts and brought your own thoughts to bear.
How will I grade these?
Students often ask about my grading criteria for blogs. To put it simply, I value the following areas:
- Basics - spelling, grammar, subject-verb agreement
- Content - Is your position or argument concise? Did you close in a strong fashion?
- Style - Good use of links, appropriate paragraph breaks, active voice, personal and external voices both used
- Creativity - creative use of multimedia or other content
To get a positive grade, you do not need to achieve perfection in all four of these areas. However, you should be strong in at least three.
