2. International Issues - Heather [8:15 - 9:45 am]

Purpose: Bring NPPAC up to speed on current international networking issues and develop appropriate policies for the following questions:

When should I2 deal with a single national network versus regional consortia?

What unique overseas research resources should be involved with I2? What if they have dangling organizations attached? (eg CERN)

What should be the policies associated with overseas branches of US academic institutions?

When should an overseas entity be a member versus signing an MOU?

What relationships should I2 have with global exchange points such as Startap, NGIXes, East/West exchange activities?

If multiple global exchange points within the US are established, what role should Abilene have in transit traffic?

Break [9:45-10:15]

3. Middleware Initiative - Ken [10:15-11:45 am]

Purpose: Inform on status and seek confirmation of directions

Description: The middleware initiative has developed principles, a workplan, a project timeline, and technical overview documents. NPPAC will be asked to comment on the plan and timelines. Particular issues include an interim NSF proposal, corporate relations, grants and consensus building mechanisms.

Lunch and checkout [11:45-12:30 p.m.]

4. Gigapops - Guy and Terry [12:30 - 1:45 p.m.]

Purpose: Review role and status of gigapops and discuss on future directions; review intergigapop connectivity and discuss options and decide on role of UCAID.

Description:

a. Intragigapop issues - Gigapop development has not proceeded as first envisioned. A quick review of the current situation in both technical and political dimensions will be followed by a discussion of what the future goals for gigapops should be and what means we have to effect those goals.

b. Intergigapop issues - There are several ways to connect gigapops: by an I2 backbone, by commodity Internet, and by other high-end backbones. Discussion will focus on what roles should I2 play in this.
