How to Apply

You should read carefully the NEH Application Instructions, which explain the eligibility requirements and selection procedure in considerable detail.  In general, we have sixteen slots and they are to be filled by teachers of American undergraduates, which generally means faculty at colleges and universities but includes adjunct faculty and community college faculty.  We can also take up to two advanced graduate students among that number.

NEH Summer Scholars are awarded a fixed amount to help cover travel, lodging, board, and other costs.  Our participants will receive $2,700.  We have arranged for a variety of housing

The application begins by filling out a cover sheet on the NEH website.  Then send the cover sheet, a CV (up to 5 pages), an application essay, and two letters of recommendation to Boulder. Because of the specialized nature of our seminar, we ask that your essay address the following points:

  1) your training in and command of literary Chinese and spoken Mandarin.

  2) how you would incorporate Daoism into your future research and teaching.

  3) whether you would be interested in contributing to an anthology of translations from Daoist sources.

The letters of recommendation should be sealed, signed across the seal, and included with other materials.  We ask that at least one of your letters of recommendation address your language abilities.  All of these materials should be sent by March 1 (postmark) to:
