Haydn 1-2

Haydn 1and 2:  through 1789 or so.
Too much music.
I would like you to look at as much of the list below as you can. If you are short of time (surprise!), familiarize yourself first with the Sonatas marked with an asterisk (*).

Reading:
Elaine R. Sisman, "Haydn's Solo Piano Music" in Marshall, Eighteenth-Century Piano Music:  Read pp. 270-307
Look at Hinson's listing for Haydn.  What editions are available?  Which ones would you recommend? How are Haydn's Sonatas catalogued?
Rosenblum. Performance Practices in Classic Piano Music. pp. 31-54  (this chapter deals with describing the piano of the time)

Think about:  How does Haydn's style evolve, both pianistically and expressively, through these works?

Review these terms: style galant (or galant style); empfindsamer style; Sturm und Drang.  To what do they refer?  How does Haydn's early writing reflect
these ideas?  Which Sonatas would you specifically associate with these terms?
