The Mars Underground

The Mars Underground

The initial gathering of the Mars Underground occurred at the first Case for Mars conference, April 29-May 2, 1981 at the University of Colorado, in Boulder. For the occasion space writer Leonard David of Washington, D.C. made lapel buttons that were handed out at the conference along with a page of instructions (image) (text).

Some of the early activities of the Mars Underground group in Boulder, and results of the first Case for Mars conference are documented in the book "Mission to Mars: Plans and Concepts for the First Manned Landing" by James E. Oberg, Stackpole, 1982. The papers presented at the Case for Mars conference can be found in the conference Proceedings.

Boston. In subsequent years other Mars Underground buttons were produced that bear the conference logo.

Note, the Mars Underground is a community of interest and not a membership organization. If you are interested in the study or exploration of Mars, you are automatically a member of the Mars Underground.
