| The approach to Fountains Abbey, a Cistercian abbey, the largest in England at the time of its dissolution. |
The river that flows alongside the abbey. |
Moss accentuating the beautiful trefoliate arches. |
Incredible fan-vaulting. |
Gothic window arches. |
The remains of a spiral staircase. |
The York City Walls. Note the red 'ribbon' of tile running through the old Roman section of the wall. Because of it, York was known as the 'Ribbon City' in Roman times. The wall is Roman up to the dark band above the ribbon. The section with arches and arrow-slits is Medieval. At the base of the wall are several Roman coffins that have been placed there for interest. | |
| If I'm not mistaken, this is the York Library, and the green in front of it. To the far left is a little bit of another ruined Abbey. Henry Tudor was busy in this area, stripping churces of their wealth to run the country, and of their leaded roofs to make armaments. |
Bootham Bar, one of the Medieval gates into the City proper. |
A narrow, cobbled lane with a view of York Minster at the end. |
