EPOB 4440 Mammalian Endocrinology
We will examine the major features of the mammalian endocrine system focusing on the hypothalamo-pituitary systems. Emphasis will be on the more traditional chemical regulators including hormones and neurocrines, but we will include some roles of autocrines/paracrines/cytokines as well. Specific attention will be made to chemistry, biosynthesis, metabolism, and mechanisms of action of regulators as well as their roles in major homeostatic systems at the organismal level. Connections to major clinical disorders and environmental problems will be made when appropriate.

EPOB 5440 Vertebrate Endocrinology
We will examine the major features of the mammalian endocrine system with the students taking EPOB 4440, focusing on the hypothalamo-pituitary systems. The basic mammalian system will be compared in separate sessions to the systems of nonmammalian vertebrates and their evolution throughout the vertebrates. This separate meeting will be scheduled after the first regular class meeting.

Emphasis will be on a variety of chemical regulators including hormones, neurocrines, and
autocrines/paracrines/cytokines. Specific attention will be made to chemistry, biosynthesis, metabolism, and mechanisms of action of regulators as well as their roles in major homeostatic systems at the organismal level.  Controversies will be explored and relationships to the specific areas of student research will be stressed whenever possible.

Each student will choose a vertebrate group to emphasize in comparision with mammals. The group will be chosen from the following: teleostean fishes, amphibians, reptiles, and birds. Students with appropriate majors (e.g., Pyschology, Kinesiology) may choose to emphasize the human in comparision with other mammals.

EPOB 4700 Vertebrate Histology
Analysis of vertebrate histology and preparation of vertebrate tissues for light microscopic examination.  Especially useful to students of vertebrate anatomy, development, and physiology.  Prerequisite: instructor consent.
