BIOLOGY - the study of life

A. Levels of organization:

Atoms

Complex biological molecules

Subcellular organelles

Cells

Tissues

Organs

Organ systems

Organisms

....................

Population

Community

Ecosystem

Biomes

Biosphere

Biologists study life at different levels

Emergent properties result from the interaction of component parts = properties not apparent at next lower level of organization.

B. Characteristics of life:

1. Highly ordered

2. Reproduce (biogenesis = life comes only from life)

3. Grow and develop

4. Take in energy, use to maintain order (Metabolism - all chem. reactions in organism)

5. Respond to environmental stimuli

6. Homeostasis - maintenance of internal conditions

7. Evolve
