Undergraduate Proficiency Exam
Requirements


 

Adopted Spring 2002.  All proficiency examinations after May 2002 will follow these requirements.
This exam is given after four semesters of study, usually at the end of the sophomore year - see policy statement.

This page ammended Fall 2010.

Part 1 -  All Degrees

These requirements can be completed anytime before the official Profiency Examination at the end of the fourth semester of study.  Failure to complete these requirements before the Proficiency Examination will result in an automatic failure of that Examination.

1.  Scales - fluency in all keys, major and minor, must be demonstrated.  Scales and various patterns found in the trombone studio Scale Workbook will be performed.  Major keys - quarter note = 76.  Minor keys - quarter note = 60.

2.  Listening Examination - recognition, composer and title, of standard  trombone solo literature (alto, tenor and bass) will be demonstrated.


Part 2 -  Requirements for the specific degrees to be performed at the Proficiency Examination:

Bachelor of Arts

1.  Solo – a piece with accompaniment as assigned.  See tenor and bass solo literature pages for examples.

2.  Sight Reading –    Tenor Trombone: tenor clef
                                   Bass Trombone:  bass clef

3.  Jazz or Orchestral – as assigned (orchestral excerpts, jazz etude, jazz transcription,
            improvisation, etc.)
 

Bachelor of Music Education

1.  Solo – a piece with accompaniment as assigned.  See tenor and bass solo literature pages for examples.

2.  Sight Reading – Tenor and Bass Trombone: tenor clef

3.  Orchestral Excerpts:

               Mozart          Tuba Mirum from Requiem (tenor)
               Brahms          Symphony No. 1 (tenor)

               Berlioz           Hungarian March from Damnation of Faust (tenor and bass)
               Wagner          Ride of the Valkyrie (tenor and bass)

               Beethoven      Symphony No. 9 (bass)
               Wagner          Entry of the Gods into Valhalla (bass)

4.  Jazz – as assigned: etude, transcription, improvisation, etc.
 

Bachelor of Music
