MATH 6270: Theory of GroupsSpring 2008MWF 10:00-10:50 am, ECCR 131SyllabusCourse description: The topics we will discuss include nilpotent and solvable groups, simple linear groups, multiply transitive groups, extensions and cohomology, and the transfer and its applications. Prerequisites: MATH 6130 (Modern Algebra 1) Assignments: During the semester there will be regularly assigned homework. Homework will be due on Wednesdays. No late homework will be accepted. However, the two lowest homework scores won't count towards the final grade. Your work will be judged on the basis of correctness, completeness, and legibility. You are expected to write your solutions in an organized way, using complete sentences. Limits of Collaboration: I recommend that you first attempt to solve the homework problems alone, using only your textbook and your notes. If you need more help, you may consult other books or persons (including me). However, I require that you write your homework solutions unaided.
Grading: Your course grade will be based on the scores of your homework assignments. There will be no extra credit assignments.
