UNDERGRADUATE AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
HORN

 

BACHELOR OF MUSIC IN HORN PERFORMANCE

 

1.      Prepared Solo Works (Accompaniment optional)

 A significant work from the standard horn repertoire.  In addition, a Mozart concerto movement of choice will be required of  all applicants.

 2.      Etudes

 Two etudes in contrasting style.  Preferred etudes include Kopprasch, Gallay, Kling, and Maxime-Alphonse bk. 3 or equivalent.

 3.      Orchestral Excerpts

 Choose two from the following list:

 Beethoven Symphony no. 3, scherzo                                   hn. 2
Beethoven Symphony no. 6, scherzo                                   hn. 1
Mahler Symphony no. 3, opening                                        hn. 1
Shostakovich Symphony no. 5, mvmt 1 low tutti                  hn. 2 or 4
R. Strauss Til Euilenspeigel opening                                     hn. 1
Tchaikovsky Symphony no. 2, opening                               hn. 1
Tchaikovsky Symphony no. 4, opening                               hn. 2 or 4
Tchaikovsky Symphony no. 5, mvmt 2                                hn. 1

 4.  Scales

Students should be able to perform all major scales demonstrating a full tone, accurate intonation, and standard fingerings.  Two octaves are requested at both quarter and eighth notes at a speed of mm=100.

 

BACHELOR OF MUSIC IN EDUCATION WITH HORN CONCENTRATION

 

1.      Prepared Solo Works (Accompaniment optional)

Contrasting movements of a significant work from the standard horn repertoire.  Examples include: Mozart concerti, R. Strauss Concerto no. 1, Saint-Saens Concert Piece, F. Strauss Concerto op 8.

 2.      Etudes

 Two etudes of contrasting style.  Preferred etudes include Kopprasch, Maxime-Alphonse bk. 2 or equivalent, any etude from 365 Selected Etudes.

3.      Scales

Students should be able to perform all major scales demonstrating a full tone, accurate intonation, and standard fingerings.  Two octaves are requested at both quarter and eighth notes at a speed of mm=100.
 

BACHELOR OF ARTS IN MUSIC-  HORN EMPHASIS

 

1.      Prepared Solo (Accompaniment optional)

A solo suitable for demonstrating excellent tone, control, musicianship, and technique.  Suggested possibilities:

W.A. Mozart Concerto no. 3 (1st mvmt or 2nd and 3rd mvmt)
Saint-Saens Concert Piece
Any work from the Mason Jones collection of Solo horn works

 2.      Etudes

One etude of choice.  Preferred etudes include Method for the French Horn, Book 2 (Pottag), Kopprasch Book 1 or equivalent.

 3.  Scales

Students should be able to perform all major scales demonstrating a full tone, accurate intonation, and standard fingerings.  Two octaves are requested at both quarter and eighth notes at a speed of mm=100.
