Horn Studio Proficiency Requirements

 

Bachelor of Arts in Music

25%   Major/Minor scales in one octave

20%   Exposition of any Eb Mozart Concerto (2, 3, 4), Concert Rondo, or

Horn quintet

35%   A Romantic or 20th century work written expressly for horn (no transcriptions)

20%   Identification of major horn repertoire from the solo and standard orchestral

literature

Bachelor of Music Degree (Education and Performance)

20%   Major/Minor scales in two octaves

20%   Movement one or three of any Eb Mozart Concert (2, 3, 4), Concert Rondo, or

Horn quintet

20%   Unaccompanied 20th century work for horn

20%   Orchestral excerpts (choose two from each list)

          Low Horn:  Haydn, Symphony 31 mvmt. 2 (hn. 2),  Mahler, Symphony 1 mvmt. 3 (hn. 4), Shostakovich, Symphony 5 (low tutti), R. Strauss Don Quixote Var. 7 and 8 (hn. 2), Wagner, Opening to Das Rheingold (hn. 8)

          High Horn:  Beethoven, Symphony 3 trio (hn. 1), Brahms Symphony 3 mvmt 3 (hn 1), R. Strauss Til Euilenspeigel, Tchaikovsky Symphony 5 mvmt 2, Wagner Short Call from Gotterdammerung

10%   Sight reading in multiple keys

The proficiency examination is given at the end of the Sophmore year of horn study.  It is a comprehensive exam, designed to serve as a culmination of the required four semesters of study for BA and Music Ed degrees, and as an upper divisional exam for Performance Majors.  Students must pass the Sophmore Proficiency in order to be eligible to give their Junior Recital.  For the Brass Proficiency Policy Statement, click here.
