As with many other Coloradans, I am a transplant from the East Coast. I received my early "socialization" in New York's lower east side, where I ran with immigrant youth from Eastern Europe and the Caribbean. I am one of the few Asian Americans with Chinese, Jewish, and Puerto Rican values and attitudes, making me a product of multicultural America.

I left New York for a higher education, eventually receiving my doctorate in modern Chinese history from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Since then, I have also developed a specialty in Asian American Studies. My major works, COUNTERREVOLUTION IN CHINA (University of Michigan Press, 1985) and THE ASIAN AMERICAN MOVEMENT (Temple University Press, 1993), reflect these two intellectual interests.

I have taught history at the University of Colorado at Boulder since 1980. Among the assignments that I have had at CU, serving as the Director of the Sewall Residential Academic Program has been the most satisfying.
