Dr. Subhendu Datta has been a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the
University of Colorado at Boulder since 1974. He received a Bachelor of Science
degree in 1954 with first class honors in Mathematics from the Presidency
College, Calcutta; Master of Science degree in Applied Mathematics from the
Calcutta University; Ph. D. degree in 1962 in Applied Mathematics from the
Jadavpur University, Calcutta. He was a Lecturer at the Jadavpur University,
Calcutta, from 1957-62; Research Lecturer at the Mathematics Research Center,
University of Wisconsin, Madison, 1962-63; Post-Doctoral fellow, Department of
Mathematics, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, 1963-64; Visiting
Assistant Professor, University of Colorado, Boulder, 1964-65; Assistant
professor, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India, 1965-67; Assistant
Professor, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada, 1967-68; Assistant and
Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering, University of Colorado at
Boulder, 1968-74. He has had Visiting Professor appointments at the Punjab
University, Chandigarh, India, Calcutta University, National University of
Mexico, Technical University of Vienna, and Chalmers University of Technology in
Sweden. He was at the Division of Basic Energy Sciences, DOE, as an IPA engineer
from 1993-94. Dr. Datta received Fulbright Scholarships in 1962 and 1986; was recipient of
Faculty Fellowships from the University of Colorado at Boulder, in 1972 and
1986; received NSF International Awards for visiting India, Ireland, and Sweden.
Dr. Datta is a Fellow of the
American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the
American Academy of Mechanics. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of
Engineering Materials and Technology, Composites Engineering, and the Applied
Mechanics Reviews.
Dr. Datta's research deals with analytical and numerical modeling of wave
propagation and scattering in solid media. The modeling has included ultrasonic
techniques for material characterization and nondestructive evaluation, elastic
guided waves in layered, composite, and anisotropic plates and cylinders, and
waves in thin layers and coatings. His current projects include thermomechanical
properties and behavior of superconducting tapes, ultrasonic evaluation of
weldments and gas pipelines, and residual stress effects.
Publications
Dr. Datta has published over 200 papers in peer reviewed journals and
conference proceedings and has edited the Proceedings of the US National
Congress of Applied Mechanics, 1974, Proceedings of the IUTAM Symposium on
Elastic Waves and Ultrasonic Nondestructive Evaluation, 1989, and four ASME
symposium volumes.
