Do we have any reason to believe that God exists?

    (a) Explain exactly what we mean by this question.  Be sure to explain the meaning of any technical terms you use.  Be sure also to say what we don't mean by this question.
    (b) Who is Blaise Pascal?  About when and where did he live?  Tell me a fun fact about him.
    (c) Briefly explain what Pascal's Wager attempts to prove, and why it is irrelevant to the the above question, as we understand it.


2. (a) Who is St. Thomas Aquinas?  About when and where did he live?  Tell me a fun fact about him.
    (b) Present Aquinas' "Second Way" to prove God exists.  (That is, just write down the line-by-line argument.)
    (c) Give the rationale for each premise of the argument (lines (1)-(4)).
    (d) Explain the inference from lines (1)-(4) to line (5).
    (e) Explain the inference from line (5) to line (6).
    (f) Present and evaluate the main objection to Aquinas' argument that we discussed in class.

3. (a) Who is G.W. Leibniz?  About when and where did he live?  Tell me a fun fact about him.
    (b) What is the Principle of Sufficient Reason (PSR)?  Discuss a couple of reasons to think PSR is true?


4. (a) Present Leibniz's Argument from Sufficient Reason.
    (b) Give the rationale for each premise of the argument (lines (1)-(4)).  Define any technical terms.
    (c) Present and discuss the main objection to Leibniz's argument that we discussed in class.
    (d) What do you think of Leibniz's argument?  Does it provide a good reason to think God exists?  Discuss.


5. (a) Present the First Argument from Evil.
    (b) Give the rationale for each premise.
    (c) Discuss two reasons to think premise 3 is false.
    (d) How might premises 3 and 4 be revised to avoid this objection?
    (e) What do you think of the revised premises?  Are they true?  Does the Argument from Evil succeed in casting a lot of doubt on the existence of a perfect deity?  Explain.
