My Research

---

• Since 1988 I have been involved with Space Life Sciences (see also: NASA Office of Biological and Physical Research, OBPR), and concentrated on plant research in space. After several years of research in gravitational and light effects on plants, I concentrated on enabling hardware designs for microgravity research in life sciences related topics, summarized in a Special Topics class: Space Hardware and Experiment Design.

• Since 1992, I participated in more than 18 space flight experiments aboard the U.S Space Shuttle. In addition, experiments were conducted aboard NASA's reduced gravity research plane (KC-135) and a rocket-launched satellite experiment (PMASS). The spaceflight program is directed by NASA's Commercial Space Center - Space Product Development.

• Our spaceflight experiments required extensive instrumentation for plant growth chambers, liquid dispensers and automated biotechnology experiments. The results can be seen on BioServe's Hardware page. BioServe faculty and staff are part of the University of Colorado's Bioengineering and BioMedical Research Program.

• With microgravity, fluid handling can be a challenge. But gravity-independent systems such as atmosphere control, lighting, video and control systems and structural work kept us all busy over the years.
