MAGIC SQUARES

MAGIC SQUARES is a small folio of pairs of numbers derived from the Chinese Magic Square of Nine. The artist designed a notational number system of the respective number of squares, thus one is represented by one square, two by two and so on. An unintended consequence of the design is the reciprocal nature of the visual forms. That is, the odd numbered figures are the visual negative or opposite of the even numbered figures. In the Chinese cosmology this would represent a reconciliation of opposites such as heaven and earth, male and female principles, etc. Laserprints, 1999, 12 pp., 3 X 3", open edition.
