Microphotograph of Serendipity Cave Sediments

Scanning electron microphotograph of goethite that has been converted to hematite by heating to 400 degrees C. Sample collected from Serendipity Cave, Colorado. Intersecting globular morphology suggests that bacteria may have played a role in formation. It is interesting to note that original morphology was not changed by heating. (Top of second deflection is 1 micron.)
