In the various formica pieces I substantially enlarged the laminate surface sample chips commonly found in the kitchen and bathroom departments of home improvement superstores. Made for the do-it-yourselfer, the sample chips represented the seeming simplicity of domestic design and installation. Unlike the originals, however, my sample tags included fragments from historic and not-so-historic ornamentation lifted from sources as diverse as academic-style catalogs like The Grammar of Ornament, thriftshop dishes, and outdated contact paper.
