Disco Barriers, Piñata(Cone), Jersey Slipcover
2003-05 Installation of Detoured at Lawndale Art Center glass mirrors, wood, paper, polyester stretch satin
In these projects, I pair authoritarian objects with glamorous materials, subverting the original intention of traffic barriers and cones. Where barriers and cones deter and contain movement, the reflective surface of Disco Barriers and the papered surface of the piñatas suggest movement that is more irreverent. In this project I am interested in recontextualizing how we view authority and fantasy, permissibility and control, surface and substance, the domestic and the institutional, the masculine and the feminine. By adding ornament to these objects, I hope to reframe perceptions of both authority and glamour and also suggest to viewers the possibility of a space where these objects seem entirely “natural.”
