Workforce Diversity, Summer 2002
You may sign
up in class on June 11 or 13 for one of the two group projects. However, if
the two groups aren’t approximately balanced you may be asked to switch to the
other.
Your
group assignment is to research the topic and present an executive summary with
handout(s) to the class on July 9 or 11. An outline of
what you intend to cover is due at the beginning of class on June 27. The two
topics are Performance Measurements and Selection Procedures.
Topic
1. Performance Measurements. Identify a company that at least one group member works for or knows
about personally that has good performance measurements. This means they have
nondiscriminatory practices, their measurements have been tested over time and
proven effective, and are well-received by employees and management. Please
summarize for us how the performance measurement system operates. Include the
design, training, implementation and any changes that have occurred over time.
Some questions you might be prepared to answer include whether their practices
have been tested via employee charges of unfairness or in other ways.
Topic
2. Selection Procedures. Identify a company that at least one group member works for or knows
about personally that has good selection procedures. This means they are
well-organized in their recruitment, interviewing and hiring procedures.
Summarize how their procedures operate. How are positions announced and to
whom? How are resumes tracked and screened, what is the interview process like?
How many interviews is a final candidate likely to have? Who makes the final
hiring decision and what guidelines are there?
