Evaluation of Crankcase Filters and Diesel Oxidation Catalysts for Reducing Children's Exposure in School Buses

The goal of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of crankcase filters and diesel oxidation catalysts on pollution levels inside school bus cabins. Concentrations of fine particulate matter, particle number, elemental and organic carbon, particle-bound organic marker species, and selected carbonyls are being measured before and after installation of retrofit control devices on three school buses in Pueblo, CO. (Co-investigators: Kim Trenbath, Michael Hannigan; Sponsor: Better Pueblo and Xcel Energy).

Sources, Composition, and Health Effects of Coarse Particulate Matter

This research is designed to investigate associations between coarse particulate matter and several health outcomes in a pair of urban and rural communities: Denver and Greeley, CO. Mass and components of coarse particulate air pollution will be measured in the two cities, providing input to epidemiological models and allowing us to evaluate spatial variability and sources of coarse PM. Daily mass concentrations will be evaluated in relation to several measures of morbidity, including cardiopulmonary emergeny department visits and adverse birth outcomes. Air Quality Impacts of Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles

This study is examining the air quality impacts of hypothetical penetration of significant numbers of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in the Denver metro area. Plug-in hybrids are expected to reduce air emissions from cars, but to increase emissions from electricity generation, especially if power is generated from coal. This study will use the CAMx atmospheric chemistry and transport model to assess the implications of this trade-off for ozone levels in Denver. Understanding Air Toxics and Carbonyl Pollutant Sources at the Urban/Mountain Interface

This study is monitoring volatile organic compound, carbonyl, and ozone concentrations at five locations in Boulder County, CO to aid in understanding the sources of these compounds and evaluating air quality models for the area. Data were collected in 2007 and are being analyzed through use of source apportionment, photochemistry and dispersion models. (Co-investigators: Michael Hannigan, Detlev Helmig, Adam Eisele, Molly Brodin, David Tanner, Pam Milmoe (Boulder County Public Health); Sponsor: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency).

Atmospheric Aerosols from Biogenic Hydrocarbon Oxidation

The goal of this research is to estimate contributions of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC) to secondary aerosol production in the eastern United States. The project focuses on contributions from oxidation of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes (SQT), and seeks to understand the influence of environmental conditions, background oxidant concentrations, and land management practices. (Co-investigators: Detlev Helmig, Christine Wieinmyer (NCAR), Alex Guenther (NCAR), Peter Harley (NCAR), Tanarit Sakulyanontvittaya(Environ); Sponsor: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency).

Improved Measurement of Exposure to PM2.5

Exposures to airborne particles less than 2.5 microns in diameter (PM2.5) pose significant health risks. The objective of this research is to improve our understanding of the composition and potential sources of PM2.5 in personal exposure samples, by (a) adapting existing organic speciation and quantification techniques to smaller PM2.5 sample quantities while reducing analysis time and expense and (b) developing and testing source apportionment techniques that specifically focus on personal PM2.5 exposures.
