CVEN 1317 - Introduction to Civil & Environmental Engineering

A 1-credit course intended to introduce first-year students to the breadth of topics and career opportunities in civil and environmental engineering. Includes units on sustainability and engineering ethics. Taught: Fall 1997, 1998; Spring 1999; Fall 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012.
2-credits and taught concurrent with Introduction to Architectural Engineering, Fall 2014, 2015.


CVEN 4897 - Professional Issues in Civil Engineering

Two-credit course. Includes professional licensure, ethics, sustainability, risk/uncertainty, leadership, public policy. Taught: Fall 2015.


SUST 2800 - Introduction to Sustainability

A 1-credit seminar course for students in the Sustainable By Design Residential Academic Program (RAP). Readings focused on humanities and social science aspects of sustainability (history, ethics, communities, sustainable development, corporate social responsibility, limits to growth, global issues), critical reflections, and in-class discussions. Taught: Fall 2015.


CVEN 4434/5434 - Environmental Engineering Design

The capstone course required for senior undergraduate students in environmental engineering, optional capstone for civil engineering, and an elective for graduate students that is recommended for students without a B.S. degree in engineering; a real-world project (such as wastewater treatment plant upgrade, sustainable water supply and treatment project for a developing community, etc.) is followed from proposal to design. Taught: Fall 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006; Spring 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013.


CVEN 5514 - Bioremediation

A graduate-level course covering current in-situ and ex-situ methods for bioremediation of contaminated sites. Focus on organic contaminant removal. New course developed. Taught: Fall 1996, Spring 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001; Fall 2002, Spring 2004, 2007, 2012; independent study 2015.


CVEN 4474/5474 - Hazardous & Industrial Waste Management

A senior-level undergraduate/graduate course covering regulations, chemical fate and transport, toxicology, risk assessment, and treatment processes. Includes a team project to conduct a risk assessment and remediation feasibility study for site proposed to the NPL (so-called Superfund sites). Taught: Spring 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2005, 2007; Fall 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011; online summer 2013, 2014, 2016.


CVEN 5544 - Solid Waste Management

Composition, quantity, and collection of municipal solid waste. Recycling and waste reduction. Design of waste processing, composting, incineration, landfills. New course developed. Taught: Maymester 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003; independent study 2016.


EVEN 1000 - Introduction to Environmental Engineering

A 1-credit course intended to introduce first-year students to the breadth of topics in environmental engineering. Taught: Fall 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010.


GEEN 1500 - Introduction to Engineering

A course intended to introduce first-year students to the breadth of engineering disciplines. Taught 5-week civil engineering module: Fall 2011, 2012.
