Current and Recent Research Projects
Routes to Sustainability for Natural Gas Development and Water and Air Resources in the Rocky Mountain Region - Trends in availability of natural gas are expected to have complex ramifications for the U.S. energy system and associated emissions and air quality. Our component of the AirWaterGas project uses a long-term planning model of the U.S. energy system to examine how emissions might change under alternative scenarios for energy development, and then uses these projections as input for modeling air quality and associated health and environmental impacts in the Rocky Mountain region. (Overall project principal investigators: Joseph Ryan, Michael Hannigan, Mark Williams; Co-investigators: Gregory Brinkman; Sponsor: National Science Foundation).
Sources, Composition, and Health Effects of Coarse Particulate Matter - This research is designed to investigate associations between coarse particulate matter and several health outcomes in a pair of urban and rural communities: Denver and Greeley, CO. Mass and components of coarse particulate air pollution will be measured in the two cities, providing input to epidemiological models and allowing us to evaluate spatial variability and sources of coarse PM. Daily mass concentrations will be evaluated in relation to several measures of morbidity, including cardiopulmonary emergeny department visits and adverse birth outcomes. Sustainable Energy Pathways: A Lab-to-Market Paradigm for the Optimal Design of Sustainable Energy Storage Materials - This project aims to develop a new multi-objective/multi-disciplinary framework for the design of advanced battery architectures, including life cycle analysis and modeling of use-phase environmental impacts up-front to ensure more sustainable products. (Co-investigators: Se-Hee Lee, Conrad Stoldt, Kurt Maute, Daven Henze, Natalie Moyen; Sponsor: NSF).
- This study is examining the air quality impacts of hypothetical penetration of significant numbers of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in the Denver metro area. Plug-in hybrids are expected to reduce air emissions from cars, but to increase emissions from electricity generation, especially if power is generated from coal. This study will use the CAMx atmospheric chemistry and transport model to assess the implications of this trade-off for ozone levels in Denver.
