Information about
Homework Assignments for the Course

Homework will be assigned and collected through Canvas. Please read and follow the paragraph on `Limits of Collaboration' on the course Syllabus.

Every homework assignment will consist of two parts:

Part DS (= Detailed Solutions):
This part of the assignment will ask you to give detailed solutions to all homework problems. "Detailed solution" means that you are asked to show your work, to use complete sentences to explain your solution, and to justify every step of your argument.

Your score for this part of the assignment will be based on
   (i) the correctness of your solution and
(ii) the clarity of your explanation and the completeness of your justifications.
A sample solution to a problem requiring a proof can be found here. Sample solutions to homework problems will also be posted after the due date of each homework set.

To submit this part of the assignment, please scan or save your solution as a pdf file, and upload the file to Canvas. Before the upload, please read and follow the requirements on "Work Uploaded for Grading to Canvas" in the course Syllabus.
Please make sure also that
$\diamond$ your name is written on the front page of your solution, and
$\diamond$ you acknowledge all outside sources (e.g., books other than the text for the course, collaboration with classmates, consultation with other persons, information found on the internet) that you used for solving the problems.

Acknowledging the use of outside sources will not affect your score as long as you write the detailed solutions alone.

Part CC (= Comprehension Check):
This part of the homework will ask you to answer questions related to your solutions to the homework problems. You will have to work out your detailed solutions before attempting to answer these questions. You will be allowed two attempts on each question.

Grading: Part CC of your homework solution will be graded automatically by Canvas, and you will see your score in the Canvas grade book immediately. Part DS will be graded manually; the score for that part of your homework will appear in the Canvas grade book after the grading is completed. Not all parts of your detailed solution will be graded manually. After the due date of each homework set, the list of problems (or parts of problems) to be manually graded will be posted on the course web page. (On the Schedule page, go to the the day when the homework was assigned.)

Important Notes:
1. The two parts of each homework assignment will appear as two separate assignments in Canvas. For example, for Homework 1, the two parts will appear as

Homework 1DS     and     Homework 1CC.

2. Your homework score for each assignment is the sum of the scores of the DS and CC parts of the assignment.

3. Solve all homework problems before you attempt part CC of the assignment on Canvas.
