The Fourth Principle
Desires
and Expectations
We try to mold ourselves, others
and our circumstances to fit our desires and expectations. We want life
to give us what we want now. When it fails to do so (which is fairly
often), we resist and this resistance to what we can't change creates
an assortment of negative emotions, like anger, loss of hope, depression,
and self-pity.
This resistance is so automatic that
we are in the dark about what is making us suffer. As the Woo Master
says in The Woo Way, "The mind is a funny thing. It wants
things its way, but life just laughs and does what it wants." When
we understand the underlying power of our desires and expectations to
make us unhappy, we can learn to give up resistance to what we can't
change. Giving up resistance when our desires and expectations are not
met helps us live happier lives.
